On May 30, 2015, the semi-final round of “the 6th Zhi Chan Li Cup” Beijing Universities Law Major Debate Competition was held in the renowned Renmin University of China. During the semi-final, Renmin University of China and Minzu University of China debated on “Whether authors of Internet literature should adopt the real-name system,” Beijing Normal University and Central University of Finance and Economics debated on “Whether Internet popular terms can be granted for trademark registration.” Ultimately, Renmin University of China and Beijing Normal University enter the final round.
Zhi Chan Li (http://www.zhichanli.com/), a famous Chinese domestic intellectual property media, is the strategic cooperation partner of this competition. Mr. Jason WANG of Beijing East IP Law Firm was invited to act as a judge for the debate. Other judges include the distinguished Prof. Shunde LI of the Chinese Academy of Social Science, Deputy Director Ms. Lin XU of the Legal Affair Department of the Trademark Review and Adjudication Board (TRAB), a judge from the Beijing Intellectual Property Court, Ms. Xiaoqing LIU of LeTV (the famous Chinese online video provider), Mr. Zhen LIU of Xiaomi (the famous Chinese mobile Internet service provider), etc.
Our vice general manager Mr. Dragon Wang was invited to speak at the Innovation China 2015 held in Shanghai on January 18th, 2015. The Innovation China Forum is a platform to bridge the innovation and investment worlds. The major emphasis is to foster a healthy and dynamic innovation ecosystem for new industries. Together with Mr. Sheng Yan, country head of Intellectual Ventures, Mr. Ben Wang, head of patents from Unilever China, and Mr. Louie Liu, former partner of Arch Venture, Mr. Dragon Wang acted as panelist on the Panel: IP Transfer and IP Commercialisation, which was moderated by Mr. Patrick Loofbourrow, partner at Cooley LLC.
As China becomes an innovation powerhouse in the world, and as more technology partnerships are formed between start-ups and MNCs, intellectual property protection becomes even more important. The above panelists shared their perspectives on commercialising and monetising IP with practitioners in the innovation and investment worlds from the east and the west.
On September 18, 2014, General Manager Dr. Xiaodong LI of Beijing East IP was invited to give a presentation at China Electronics Standardization Institute. The presentation was based on the association between standardization and patent. Dr. LI shared his experiences in handling multinational corporations’ problems with the Institute’s managers and leaders. Dr. LI also led in-depth discussions regarding the necessary standard patent licensing fees and other related topics with the Institute’s attendees.
On August 15, 2014, Manager of the Electric Department patent attorney Qiang LIN was invited to JETRO’s Beijing representative office to give a presentation on “The Best Practice of Software Patent in China.” Based on his comparative research on various country’s patent law, Attorney Lin presented a detailed introduction for software patent protection history, current practices, latest case reviews, and heated debated topics based on his own experiences on representing multinationals’ cases. All of JETRO’s Beijing representative office’s patent professionals attended this seminar, occupied the entire conference room. JETRO’s members from their Shanghai and Guangzhou offices also attended this seminar through live web camera. After the presentation, Attorney Lin answered questions in general practice, and discussed heated questions with attendees.
Both parties believe such in-depth, professional share and exchange should be held more often.
In July 2014, the Beijing Haidian District Intellectual Property Office invited Chairman Dr. Lulun GAO to give an intellectual property training for government officials of Haidian District.
On May 28 – 29, 2014, Beijing East IP attended the Internet and E-Commerce IP Forum hosted by the Supreme People’s Court and the Beijing High Court. Chairman Dr. Lulin GAO presented a topic on software and business patent protection on the Internet.
On October 17, 2013, the Second China InternetInnovation and Intellectual Property Protection Summit was held in Hangzhou, China. Chairman Dr. Lulin GAO presented as a keynote speech as the Vice Chairman of the Internet Society of China. Beijing East IP, a committee member of the Summit, successfully invited Judge Kesheng JIN the Deputy Chief Judge of the Intellectual Property Tribunal of the Supreme People’s Court.
